Peace Parked Designed by the People for the People
July 6, 2021 was a great day I will not forget for a longtime. My brother Mac Schmitz was instrumental in the development and construction of a new Peace Park located right in the heart of the westside of downtown Atlanta GA.
I attended the ribbon cutting for the Rodney Cook Sr. Park. A planned, new 16-acre state of the art park designed by the people for the people, located in historic Vine City providing much needed open space for residents to gather, exercise, play music, experience nature and much more. Centered around the 2-acre park are walking paths elevated to stay operational even during storm surge events and exercise equipment strategically placed at the higher elevations. The Park is designed to capture up to nine million gallons of stormwater during heavy rainfall events to mitigate against disastrous flooding that devastated the surrounding neighborhoods.
The Park was completed by a partnership of the National Monuments Foundation, The Trust for Public Land, and the City of Atlanta’s Department of Watershed Management.
