New Uses for Old
Wind Turbine Blades
Sustainable solutions helping to reverse climate change come in many shapes, sizes and are implemented at different levels of society! Today’s spotlight will focus on brilliant ways people in Denmark are upcycling old wind turbine blades.
While recently in Denmark, Think Greener, LLC noticed their wind turbines everywhere, both on land and offshore, providing 40% of Denmark’s energy. In my recent blog “Are Wind Turbines Sustainable?”, I discussed the problems of older windfarms coming to the end of their lifecycle and the blades are not recyclable.
Denmark has come up with some revolutionary ways to upcycle the large blades and divert them from landfills. In the past, I have learned about architectural firms repurposing these blades as their kit of parts when implementing their designs. They can be used as a non-structural element such as exterior fenestration providing shade from the sun. The Danish Re-Wind research project has created and implemented protective bicycle shelters to store and secure bicycles while not in use. The project is working on new ideas for repurposing the blades, such as stadium bleachers, pedestrian foot bridges and even skate parks!
One of my FB followers made me aware of this concept about five days ago. It’s great to see people reacting to the solutions I have been blogging about for the past three months! Today, I was contacted through LinkedIn by a Pediatric Neurologist who is interested in getting involved with Think Greener, LLC to help make a change in reversing climate change.
This is exactly why I have devoted my life to this mission! Brining awareness to humanity and inspiring them to be the change. Together, we can make the change that is needed!
