Climate Migration and Bankruptcy

NYC Catastrophic Flash Flooding

Climate Migration is happening to society at many different levels around the world and is becoming more frequent and not just temporary anymore! Much like eastern North Carolina, that sits on a coastal plain, vulnerable to flooding due to the increase of extreme rainfall and hurricanes influenced by climate change.
Looking back, about 2 years ago, while working in corporate America, I would attend company meetings to discuss business development opportunities, identify new trends and mitigation efforts that would be needed in the future. I spoke up and said, “Soon the world will be facing mass migration of human civilizations at a large scale because of climate change”. Honestly, I am not sure how many of my team members really understood what I was trying to convey back then. With forward thinking as a core value, they welcomed my input, as they would always do for everyone in the company! It was a great company to be a part of!
About 5 years ago, Hurricane Matthew wreaked havoc on the East coast and flooded a town in N.C. called Fair Bluff, with four feet of water. Then three years ago, Hurricane Florence caused devastating flooding again. The city of Fair Bluff is up against climate bankruptcy, as it is still recovering from these natural disasters. Population fell by 50%, taxes decreased, the grocery store and other shops never reopened. The local factory is closed, and the police department is next to close.
The increase in frequency and magnitude of extreme weather is leaving many towns vulnerable to physical devastation and economic collapse. Hurricane Ida tour through much of the east coast making landfall in Louisiana and exiting off Long Island and Connecticut! New York and New Jersey were hit hard with catastrophic flash flooding and tornado warnings. Rainfall rates of 3 to 5 inches per hour have been recorded, causing the shutdown of many subway lines, disruptions to air travel, closure of roads and many cars and homes under feet of water.
