Thinking Greener & Powered by Renewable Energy

Can CO2 be removed from our atmosphere by mechanical means? Yes!
Today, Climeworks AG, a Swiss company, went live with the world’s largest CO2 air scrubber, located near Reykjavik. The scrubber uses Iceland’s geothermal heat and renewable energy to power the facility.
The technology is comprised of eight air collectors that are arranged around a central plant. Each collector has a fan on one side and intake vents on the other side, with carbon capturing filters in the middle. As air is pulled through the intake vents, the filters capture the CO2 out of the air. Once filters have been saturated, the collector shuts down to remove the carbon from the filter. This is achieved by closing both… Continue reading

Solar farms are in focus within Think Greener’s sustainable spotlight! So, what is a solar farm? They cover a large area of land typically in a rural setting and the solar panels are ground mounted, different than rooftop solar. The largest of the solar farms typically provide power to utilities rather than local grids and can range from 10MW to more than 200MW. It’s estimated that 25 acers of land will produce 5 MW, enough power needed for 1,500 houses.
Solar farms have a great return on their investment and are one of the best solutions to help reduce carbon emissions that contribute to global warming. It’s a simple way of generating clean renewable energy in a safe manner,… Continue reading

I can’t hear the Solar powered train coming down the tracks! Yes, that’s right… you read it correctly! Soon diesel locomotives will be a thing of the past, replaced by locomotives of the future running 100% on solar power.
The Solar Train Team in Sonoma, California is working towards creating an 80ft train powered 100% by solar, and travel at speeds up to 65 mph by 2022! Currently, India has implemented solar panels on their trains to power auxiliary needs such as fans, A/C, and lights. This solution alone, is estimated to save 5,547 gallons of diesel fuel each year, equivalent to $20,000 in fuel saving per train.
Another opportunity for solar to help decarbonize the railway systems is… Continue reading
