Renewable Energy Report
Question: How is the world doing on its quest to implement clean renewable energy?
According to the International Energy Agency (IEA) latest report, the world is heading in the right direction, but needs a more aggressive approach to avoid the worsening impacts from our climate crisis. The estimated newly commissioned global renewable energy production for 2021 is 290 gigawatts, expected to set a record.
Renewable energy alone will not solve the crisis. The use of fossil fuel must end, and the new exploration of oil and gas must stop by the end of 2021. Solar energy dominates the global renewable energy market and over the next five years expects to double its capacity over the output of wind energy. From 2019 – 2020 the U.S. increased its solar energy output from 194 gigawatts to 280 gigawatts. IEA report indicates that, by end of 2021, U.S. renewable energy output could reach 375 gigawatts, while continuing to scale up production to achieve an output of 554 gigawatts by 2026.
If Biden’s Build Back Better Act goes into law, it could enable the U.S. hundreds of billions of dollars to combat the climate crisis by creating a new renewable energy economy, as we are in the beginning phases of a renewable revolution. According to the IEA report, renewables will make up 95% of global power capacity by end of 2026.
We are not out of the woods yet. There is much work to for us on a global scale that requires alliances like never seen before, subsides removed from fossil fuels to support renewable energy solutions and accountability to be a driving force. This global pandemic continues to reinvent itself and is a cause for concern in many ways. We are on the brink of a supply chain shortage needed to produce photovoltaic cells and the increased cost, which could erase the advances solar, has made in reduction of its unit price. If this becomes a reality, the wind market, next highest renewable, will have a resurgence like in 2015 and is expected to see an increase of 89 gigawatts of capacity growth through 2026. The Biden Administration has set ambitious clean energy goals. The U.S. expects to produce 30 gigawatts of offshore wind power by 2030 and committing to decarbonizing the U.S. power grid by 2030.
We the people, have the power to make the change and #bethechange. It can start at home by implementing renewable energy solutions and sharing your accomplishments with friend and neighbors. As Gandhi said, “There are two days in the year that we cannot do anything, yesterday and tomorrow,” So now is the time to make it count and get into action.
