It’s been almost a week since Hurricane Ida made landfall in Louisiana and my heart goes out to all the people who were affected by this large devastating hurricane. There are still about 70% of people who are without power in Louisiana, and it may take up to 1 month before power is restored to all residents and businesses. Do you think the U.S. is prepared for the upcoming extreme weather events that are predicted to be our new normal?
I just heard some breaking news of a substantial oil spill located 2 miles offshore in the Gulf of Mexico caused by Hurricane Ida. The US Coast Guard and clean-up crews are racing to try and locate the source of the… Continue reading
The race to net zero emissions by 2050 is within reach through existing renewable energy technologies at hand. When you add many new sustainable solutions that are in the works, we have a very optimistic outlook of crossing the finish line! Here is a new renewable scalable solution that raises the bar for the offshore wind industry. Have you ever heard of a floating offshore wind turbine? Well, now you have!
A Norwegian company, Wind Catching Systems, is developing a multi turbine floating windfarm capable of generating five times more energy than the largest wind turbine in the world. The strongest winds are located far offshore in very deep water prohibiting traditional wind turbines to be placed on the oceans floor. This… Continue reading
Did you ever think hot sand could be a sustainable solution helping to reverse climate change?
The answer is, yes. I touched on this concept in a recent blog called Renewable Energy Storage Solutions. Lithium-ion batteries are great energy storage for laptops, small electronics and EV’s but it’s not always the best method for storing renewable energy for long durations and at larger capacities.
This is where sand comes into action! Helping the world to achieve carbon neutrality in the built environment. As we implement more renewable energy sources to power our buildings, industries, and the grid with solar and wind, we need continuous power even when the sun and wind are not available.
To meet this energy storage challenge, scientist… Continue reading
Climate Migration is happening to society at many different levels around the world and is becoming more frequent and not just temporary anymore! Much like eastern North Carolina, that sits on a coastal plain, vulnerable to flooding due to the increase of extreme rainfall and hurricanes influenced by climate change.
Looking back, about 2 years ago, while working in corporate America, I would attend company meetings to discuss business development opportunities, identify new trends and mitigation efforts that would be needed in the future. I spoke up and said, “Soon the world will be facing mass migration of human civilizations at a large scale because of climate change”. Honestly, I am not sure how many of my team members really understood… Continue reading
